Naruto Had To Nerf Its Most Iconic Jutsu Because It Was Too Broken

Naruto’s Shadow Clone Jutsu had such a powerful effect that its rules were changed dramatically as soon as it was introduced.

Naruto Shadow Clone Jutsu was his signature move for the entire series. However, when it was introduced, it had to be nerfed because it was too powerful. Naruto featured other powerful jutsu such as the Rasengan whose creation can be found in The Fourth Hokage Manga by series creator Masashi Kishimoto. However, Naruto’s first jutsu was his most popular, and it had to change shortly after it was introduced.

Kage Bunshin Jutsu (Shadow Clone Jutsu) creates copies of the user and divides their charka equally amongst each clone. This was the perfect technique for Naruto, who had colossal reserves of charka. Naruto uses a lot of shadow clones, whereas "normal" shinobi only create one at a given time. He then uses them for many creative strategies and techniques. The weakness of the jutsu was that the clones would disappear after they took a blow, but this wasn't always true.

Naruto’s Shadow Clones could have taken a hit and stayed put in the past

In Chapter #6 of Naruto during Kakashi’s first lesson, Naruto tried to rush his teacher to grab one of the two bells that Team 7 was assigned to steal. Kakashi's first attack was a complete failure, but a group of Naruto shadow clones seized him and restrained him. Naruto made Kakashi demonstrate ninjutsu in order to avoid being punched. Naruto was surprised to find that instead of hitting his teacher, his punch landed on his clone. The clone was supposed to dissipate after being hit according to the rules that were later developed for this technique. However, it didn't. It is confirmed by the fact that all of Naruto's clones begin to fight each other, believing one could be Kakashi who has used a Transformation Jutsu.

Naruto fans know that later in the story Naruto realizes how valuable Shadow Clone Jutsu can be, particularly for training. Kakashi explained to Naruto how any information that the Shadow Clone gains is returned to its owner when it is dispelled. This feature allows Naruto to train and learn his abilities more efficiently than anyone else. Shadow Clones had already allowed Naruto, before this, to defeat his enemies in battle despite their one-hit weakness. The protagonist would have been able to overwhelm any opponent with his sheer numbers if this hadn't happened.

Naruto Series Benefits from Altering the Shadow Clones Rules

Naruto’s Shadow Clones Jutsu is a powerful technique that has a deeper significance to the character, and to the themes of the series. It is a physical representation of the protagonist’s loneliness and desire for friends. It is one of the most iconic elements of the series because it allows for creative expression in battle scenes. It's easy for one to believe that Kishimoto realized quickly how dangerous this technique was and had to change it by introducing the "one hit rule". The story of Naruto was made more exciting and intense by changing the rules for the Shadow Clone Jutsu at the start of the series.
