One Piece users have a few people who have unlocked 'awakening' - the ultimate Devil Fruits power. This gives them a major boost in their abilities. The Zoan-types can achieve almost unimaginable physical capabilities, but they also risk losing their minds due to their animalistic nature. Luffy's Devil Fruit (also known as the Hito Hito no Mi Model: Nika) is a Zoan of the Mythical branch. Luffy's appearance, and his abilities as Gear Fifth (which he refers to), differ from those of other Zoans that have been shown in recent episodes.

Luffy's Gear Fifth doesn't have black flames like One Piece's other awakenings
During the Straw Hats' current adventure, they are fighting with members of CP0. This elite group of spies, assassins, and spies is in service to the World Government. Two old enemies, Rob Lucci, and Kaku are also Zoan Devil Fruits Users. Lucci showed off his newly awakened form immediately, with black flames coiling around the neck and shoulders. The distinct colors of Luffy's signature awakening smoke/flames compared to Lucci and Kaku help differentiate Mythical Zoan Users.
