Kabuto was influenced by his troubled youth. He would hold on to others due to the lack of an identity. Here's why.
Kabuto Yakushi is a controversial character for many Naruto fans. This has been true since his introduction in the Chunin Exams Arc. Kabuto Yakushi's unwavering devotion to Orochimaru and his devious scheming along with his ever-present sneer always brought tension and uneasiness to any situation in which he appeared. Kabuto, who made his debut in the Konoha Crush as an Otogakure Ninja, was an antagonist who waited his turn, living under Orochimaru as his loyal slave. Sasuke's apparent death at the hands the Sannin changed everything. For the first time, he had no master.
Kabuto, realizing that he never defined himself, became a key figure in the Fourth Shinobi World War. He was responsible for the revival of hordes of legendary ninjas from the Naruto world with the help of Edo Tensei. After being defeated by Itachi he gave up his old ways and returned home to Konohagakure, where he worked in the village orphanage. Kabuto began his journey in the same orphanage where he learned medical ninjutsu, assassination and other techniques he would become masterful of. Kabuto’s tragic and dark past is what shaped him into an antagonist. If not for his misfortune in his youth, the story could have been different.
The Boy With No Name
Nono Yakushi found the young Kabuto in the ruins of a destroyed city after a battle. The boy had lost his memory due to a head injury sustained in the conflict. He could not remember where he came from or his name. After being healed by Nono he was brought back to his village, where Urushi, another child from the orphanage placed a helmet over him to protect him against any further blows to the face. Nono thought it odd that he didn't have a Japanese name. He gave him the Japanese word "Kabuto" which means helmet.
Kabuto was also suffering from poor eyesight. Nono found this out when he went to thank Nono for naming Kabuto, even though it was way past the time for everyone in the orphanage to go bed. Kabuto didn't know this because his poor eyesight made it impossible for him to read a clock. Nono gave Kabuto her glasses as a way to alleviate the problem. Kabuto felt forever indebted for her kindness. Kabuto grew to love Nono as a parent figure, and she was his only family during the turbulent years of his youth.
A Medical Ninjutsu Prodigy
Kabuto learned medical ninjutsu from Nono during his childhood at the orphanage. He became very proficient in it. Kabuto helped Nono treat wounded Konoha Shinobi. This provided some extra funding for the orphanage, but most of the money still came from the village. At one point, during Kabuto’s stay in the orphanage, Danzo visited Nono and urged her to return to her old life as a Root division member of Konoha’s Anbu by donating orphaned kids to the organization. Nono's refusal to accept the funding would have had disastrous consequences for the children living there. Kabuto, who had heard this conversation, offered to be recruited despite Nono's and Urushi’s protests.
soon became an indispensable asset for the Anbu. He honed his skills in assassination and espionage. He lost his innocence and became a cold-blooded killer. Nono was a highly skilled kunoichi in the Anbu and Root. She was often trusted with critical and dangerous missions. Nono, who went by the codename of "The Wandering Nun," was a master at gathering intelligence. She had left the Anbu and become a captain in the Medic Corps as well as running the orphanage.
Kabuto's participation in the Anbu may not have happened without his relationship with Nono. Even though Nono only had good intentions for her son, she treated him in a way that was similar to a father. Kabuto gained experience in the Anbu by infiltrating and fighting forces from other hidden villages. He became a competent and seasoned operative. Kabuto's final mission was to gather intelligence and infiltrate Iwagakure. However, this mission ended in tragedy, which would forever change his life.
Betrayed By Those He Admired
Kabuto, after infiltrating the village, was attacked by an Iwagakure Shinobi for spying. He quickly killed them with his chakra scalpel. Kabuto was horrified to discover that his pursuer, Nono, had been working in Iwagakure for Root. Kabuto apologized profusely and tried to heal Nono's injuries but to no avail. She succumbed to her injuries. In her final moments, Nono was unable to recognize Kabuto. This was very upsetting for the young Kabuto who could not understand how his only family member did not know him.
Orochimaru was sent by Danzo, to eliminate Kabuto, to help him escape Nono's back-up. Orochimaru, seeing Kabuto in his plight and explaining that Danzo brainwashed Nono with false photos of him so that she wouldn't be able to recognize him when they met, took pity on Kabuto. Danzo managed to eliminate two of Root's most experienced and knowledgeable operatives by pitting Nono against Kabuto. Kabuto was deeply troubled by the revelation and rushed to attack Orochimaru. The Sannin survived the assault, and took him under his wings, telling him that his previous identity had been destroyed. When Orochimaru expressed his desire to build Otogakure as a hidden village, Kabuto decided to join him. The two then fabricated an account where Kabuto was found by Nono and raised thereafter the Third Shinobi World War's Battle of Kikyo Pass.
Kabuto, while serving his master, also encountered Sasori and was made into a sleeper agent for the Akatsuki. He also met Sasori, who turned into a sleeper for an Akatsuki. Orochimaru discovered this and released him from Sasori’s control. This allowed Kabuto to infiltrate Akatsuki. Orochimaru spent the rest of Kabuto's time with him helping the Sannin to carry out his experiments. This included gathering DNA for Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation and studying the abilities the Otogakure Shinobi he recruited. He became an invaluable asset to the Sannin over the years but did not realize his identity until the Fourth Shinobi World War. Kabuto was both a villainous and tragic figure. His life was filled with great losses. If not for his treatment in his youth, Kabuto might have become a famous shinobi.
