What Really Happened to Mother Carmel in One Piece

Mother Carmel was Big Mom's most beloved character. But she disappeared suddenly on the Emperor. What happened to Mother Carmel in One Piece exactly?

As an Emperor of The Sea Big Mom is the most formidable opponent the Straw Hat Pirates will face in One Piece. She is a sweet-toothed, menacing giant that will stop at nothing to satisfy her cravings. She was not going to let the Straw Hats leave the island alive when they infiltrated and destroyed her tea party. Big Mom's vile, spoilt behavior has made her a target for many since she was a child. Mother Carmel, her foster mother, has shown her the true meaning of affection.

Mother Carmel, a missionary known as "Holy Mother," was a nun. She gave shelter to despicable and unlovable orphans in her orphanage. Linlin, a young orphan, was one of these orphans. She took her in when she was only five years old and tended to all her needs and wants. Possibly, it was the best year of Big Mom’s life. But that didn't last long. The nun and the orphans vanished during Big Mom's 6th birthday. Big Mom is clueless about where all the orphans have gone.

Big Mom Ate Mother Carmel and Her Fellow Orphans

The manga made it appear that Mother Carmel, and her children, simply left Linlin when Big Mom explained how her foster family had suddenly disappeared. She was in ecstasy when she cried. She was so happy with the semla croquembouche that the other orphans had prepared for her, she could not see through the tears. She kept eating until she felt satisfied. When she opened her eyes again, everyone else had disappeared. The manga did not explain exactly what happened to nun and orphans. However, there were many hints that pointed to their horrific demise.

The young Big Mother cannibalized Mother Carmel, her foster siblings and the monster 6-year-old Linlin. This was just the beginning of a series of binge-eating episodes. Linlin was not greeted by a peaceful environment when she opened her eyes. There was a lot of debris on the floor and the place looked messy. Linlin admitted that she ate pieces of the table out of sheer delight. The table was not the only object that she ate. The debris included tattered clothes with bite marks. It was also after this incident that she obtained her Soul-Soul Fruit abilities – the exact same Devil Fruit powers that Mother Carmel had.

Mother Carmel is the reason why Big Mom is who she is

Mother Carmel may have appeared to be a generous philanthropist but she was not a saint. The old nun did take in and foster many troublemakers but she only did it for her benefit. Although she was known only as the Holy Mother on the surface, she was a notorious child trafficker. She sold her children to different forces, such as the World Government. Linlin, her most prized catch, was also her last job. She was unfortunately eaten before she could reap the rewards of her labor.

Mother Carmel's true motive doesn't alter the fact that she is Linlin's closest friend and the former Emperor’s role model. Mother Carmel passed away before Linlin discovered her true identity. Big Mom still sees Mother Carmel as a loving mother and is shocked to see her picture destroyed. Big Mom also wants to create a society where everyone, no matter what race they are, can see each other as equals because that is the value Mother Carmel taught her. It's debatable whether she received the justice she deserved. One Piece, after all, is ruled and dominated by crime and violence.
